What Is Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is a multi-layer synthetic flooring engineered to replicate the look of natural hardwood or stone. Modern LVP uses high-resolution imaging, embossed textures, and beveled edges to create planks that closely resemble the real thing.

Each plank is built from multiple layers:

• Wear layer — a clear protective coating on top that resists scratches, scuffs, and stains.
• Design layer — the printed image that gives the plank its wood or stone appearance.
• Core layer — the rigid or flexible body of the plank that provides structure and stability.
• Backing layer — the bottom layer that provides cushion, sound absorption, and moisture protection.

Types of Luxury Vinyl Plank

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite)

SPC has a rigid core made from limestone and PVC. It is extremely dense and stable, which makes it highly resistant to dents and temperature changes. SPC is thinner than WPC but harder underfoot. It works well in high-traffic areas, commercial spaces, and rooms with heavy furniture.

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite)

Glue-Down LVP

Floating (Click-Lock) LVP

Understanding Wear Layers

The wear layer is the clear protective coating on top of every LVP plank. It determines how well the floor resists scratches, scuffs, and everyday wear over time. Wear layers are measured in mils (1 mil = 1/1,000 of an inch), not millimeters.

30 Mil Wear Layer

8 mil wear layer

If you want a floor that can be refinished over decades and adds premium resale value, hardwood is worth the investment. How to Choose the Right LVP

Start with the wear layer

For most Atlanta homes, a 12 mil or 20 mil wear layer is the right range. If you have pets, kids, or heavy foot traffic, go with 20 mil. If you are flooring a bedroom, office, or low-traffic space, 12 mil gives you solid performance at a lower price point.

Choose your core type

SPC is the better choice for kitchens, basements, entryways, and any area with heavy use. WPC is the better choice for bedrooms, living rooms, and spaces where comfort underfoot matters. Both are waterproof.

Match the product to the room

• Kitchens and bathrooms: SPC with 20 mil wear layer. Waterproof performance is critical here.
• Living rooms and bedrooms: WPC with 12-20 mil. Comfort and appearance take priority.
• Basements: SPC with attached underlayment. Handles concrete subfloors and moisture well.

Level the Subfloor

Floating LVP can go over most existing hard surfaces (tile, vinyl, concrete) as long as the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Glue-down requires a smooth subfloor with no debris. Indoor Air Quality and Environmental Standards

LVP Care and Maintenance

• Sweep or vacuum regularly. Use a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum with a hard-floor setting. Dirt and grit can dull the wear layer over time if left on the surface.
• Damp mop as needed. LVP is waterproof, so a damp mop with a pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner works well. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and steam mops, which can damage the wear layer.
• Wipe up spills promptly. While LVP is waterproof on the surface, standing water can seep between plank seams on floating installations. Wipe up puddles and spills when you see them.
• Use furniture pads. Place felt pads under all furniture legs to prevent scratching and denting, especially under heavy pieces and chairs that move frequently.
• Skip the wax. LVP does not need waxing, polishing, or refinishing. The wear layer is the finish, and adding products on top can create a hazy buildup.
• Use doormats at entryways. Outdoor grit is one of the biggest causes of wear layer damage. Mats at every entrance help keep abrasive particles off the floor.
