Custom Rugs From Carpet

If you cannot find the right size, color, or style in a pre-made rug, we can create one. Any carpet style in our showroom can be cut and finished into a custom area rug or runner.

Custom rugs are made from the same carpet brands we carry for full installations, including:

  • Fabrica — Premium residential carpet in luxurious textures. Ideal for high-end custom rugs in living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Masland — Classic patterns and high-performance construction. Works especially well for patterned custom stair runners and hallway runners.
  • Anderson Tuftex — Our largest carpet selection with over 1,700 styles. A wide range of colors, fibers, and textures to choose from.
  • DH Floors — Stain-resistant options built for everyday use. A practical choice for family room rugs and high-traffic hallway runners.

Custom Finishing Options

The edge finish is what transforms a piece of carpet into a polished, professional rug or runner. We offer three finishing methods, each with a different look and feel.

Fabric Binding

Fabric binding creates a clean, tailored border around the edge of the rug. You choose the fabric color and width. Binding works well for both casual and formal rugs, and it is the most popular option for standard area rugs.

Serging

Serging wraps yarn tightly around the edge of the rug for a classic, hand-finished look. Serging is available in a wide range of yarn colors and works especially well for runners and rugs with a more traditional or textured design.

Blind Stitching

Blind stitching folds the carpet edge under and stitches it in place, creating a nearly invisible finish. You can customize the stitch thickness, color, and material. This is the preferred option for stair runners and high-end custom rugs where you want a clean, uninterrupted look from edge to edge.

Finishing Options Comparison
Finish Type Look Best For Customization Price Range
Fabric Binding Clean, tailored border Standard area rugs, casual spaces Wide range of fabric colors and widths $
Serging Classic yarn-wrapped edge Runners, traditional or textured rugs Wide range of yarn colors $$
Blind Stitching Nearly invisible, seamless Stair runners, high-end custom rugs Stitch thickness, color, and material $$$

Custom Stair and Hallway Runners

Stair runners are one of our most requested custom projects. Flooring Atlanta completes a large number of stair and hallway runner installations each year. Our team handles the full process from carpet selection and cutting through professional finishing and installation.

What to know about stair runner projects:

  • Stair runners are cut from carpet, not from pre-made rugs. You can choose any carpet style in our showroom.
  • Most stair runner projects use blind stitching or serging for the edge finish.
  • Stair runner projects may require two visits: one for measuring and cutting, and a second for installation after the finishing process is complete.
  • We do not install runner rods. Our stair runners are fully adhered for a secure, professional fit.
  • Patterned carpet from Stanton, Mohawk and Shaw is especially popular for stair runners because the patterns add visual interest while hiding wear.

Where to Use Area Rugs

  • Living rooms and family rooms. Area rugs define seating areas, add warmth over hardwood or LVP, and reduce noise. Choose a size large enough for all front furniture legs to sit on the rug.
  • Bedrooms. A rug under the bed adds comfort first thing in the morning. Place a runner on each side or a large rug that extends 18 to 24 inches beyond the bed frame.
  • Stairs and hallways. Custom runners protect high-traffic areas, reduce noise, and improve traction. Patterned styles are the most popular because they hide wear and add character.
  • Entryways and landings. A durable rug in the entryway catches dirt, protects the floor underneath, and sets the tone for the home.
  • Home offices. A rug under the desk defines the workspace, protects the floor from chair casters, and adds comfort during long hours.
  • Outdoor and covered spaces. Nourison’s Aloha and other outdoor-rated collections are UV-resistant, easy to clean, and built for patios, sunrooms, and covered porches.

How Custom Rugs and Runners Work

  • Visit a Showroom or Design In-Home. Walk into any of our four locations to browse carpet styles and finishing samples, or we can come to you to measure and custom-fit a rug to the specific size of your room. Our team will help you narrow down the perfect options based on your space, style, and intended use.
  • Choose your carpet and finish. Select the carpet style, size, and edge finishing option. For stair runners, we discuss pattern direction, landing coverage, and stair configuration.
  • Precision cutting. Our crew measures and cuts the rug or runner to your exact specifications.
  • Professional finishing. A dedicated finishing crew applies the selected binding, serging, or blind stitching. This step ensures a clean, durable edge that holds up over time.
  • Pickup or installation. Standard area rugs are available for pickup once finishing is complete. Stair runners and certain blind-stitched projects include professional installation, which may occur on a second visit after finishing.

Area Rugs Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our flooring services and installation

Yes. Most carpet styles in our showroom can be cut and finished into a custom area rug or runner. This includes plush, textured, frieze, Berber, and patterned carpet from brands like Fabrica, Masland, DH Floors, and Anderson Tuftex. Our team will confirm that your selected carpet is suitable for the size and finishing method you want. Visit any of our four showrooms to see options in person.

It typically takes approximately 1 day; however, turnaround time depends on the carpet selection and finishing method. Standard fabric binding is typically the fastest. Blind stitching and serging may take longer, depending on the size and complexity. Our team reviews the full timeline during your showroom consultation so you know what to expect before placing your order.

Fabric binding wraps a strip of fabric around the edge of the rug for a clean, tailored look. Serging wraps yarn around the edge for a classic, hand-finished appearance. Blind stitching folds the carpet edge under and stitches it invisibly for a seamless finish. Each method has a different look and price point. We keep samples of all three in our showrooms so you can compare them side by side.

Yes. We professionally install custom stair runners, including straight runs, curved staircases, and landings. Most stair runner projects require two visits: one for measuring and cutting, and a second for installation after the edge finishing is complete. We do not install runner rods. Our runners are fully adhered to for a secure, professional fit.

It depends on the room. For living rooms, the rug should be large enough for all front furniture legs to sit on it. For bedrooms, extend the rug 18 to 24 inches beyond the bed frame on each side. For dining rooms, the rug should be large enough for chairs to remain on the rug when pulled out. If you are unsure, bring your room dimensions to any of our showrooms and our team will help you determine the right size.

Yes. Our Mohawk Credit Card through Synchrony provides 12 months interest-free on custom rug and runner projects, including materials and installation. This applies to both pre-made area rugs and custom-cut rugs from carpet.
