Types of Carpet

Plush (Velvet)

Plush carpet has a smooth, even surface with a soft, luxurious feel underfoot. It works best in bedrooms, formal living rooms, and low-traffic spaces where comfort is the priority. Plush shows footprints and vacuum marks more easily than textured styles, so it is best suited for rooms that do not get heavy daily use.

Textured (Trackless)

Textured carpet has fibers that are twisted in different directions, which hides footprints and vacuum marks. This is the most versatile carpet style and works well in family rooms, hallways, and bedrooms. It holds up to moderate foot traffic and is available in a wide range of colors and densities.

Frieze (Shag)

Frieze carpet has tightly twisted, curled fibers that create a casual, relaxed look. The high twist count (up to 7-8 per inch) makes it durable and resistant to matting. Frieze is a strong choice for family rooms, playrooms, and high-traffic areas where you want a forgiving, easy-to-maintain surface.

Berber (Loop Pile)

Berber carpet features looped fibers that create a dense, durable surface. It is one of the most hard-wearing carpet styles and performs well in basements, offices, and high-traffic hallways. Berber is available in solid colors and flecked patterns. One consideration: loop pile can snag if you have pets with long claws.

Patterned

Patterned carpet combines cut and loop fibers to create geometric designs, stripes, or textured visuals. It adds visual interest to stairs, hallways, and transitional spaces. Patterned styles are also available as custom stair runners and area rugs.

Carpet Tile

Carpet tile is modular, easy to install, and simple to replace if a section gets damaged. It is primarily used in commercial spaces like offices and schools, but it also works in basements, bonus rooms, and home offices. We carry commercial-grade carpet tile from Aladdin Commercial, Masland Contract, and Shaw Contract.

How to Choose the Right Carpet

Consider your lifestyle

If you have kids, pets, or high foot traffic, look for carpet with built-in stain resistance and a higher twist count. Frieze and textured styles hold up better in active households than plush.

Understand density and twist

Density measures how closely fibers are packed together. A higher density number (3,000 to 5,000+) means a more durable carpet that resists matting and crushing. Twist count measures how tightly each fiber is wound. Higher twist counts (4 to 8 per inch) mean the carpet holds its shape longer and resists fraying.

Choose the right fiber

  • Nylon — The most durable carpet fiber. Best for high-traffic areas and homes with pets. Resists wear, crushing, and staining with proper treatment.
  • Polyester (PET) — Naturally stain-resistant and available in vibrant colors. Best for bedrooms and low-to-moderate traffic areas.
  • Triexta — A newer fiber with built-in stain and soil protection at the molecular level. A strong choice for families who want durability without chemical treatments.
  • Wool — A natural, premium fiber with a soft hand and excellent durability. Higher price point, best for formal spaces and homeowners who prefer natural materials.

Do not skip the padding

Carpet padding absorbs impact, extends the life of your carpet, reduces sound, and adds comfort underfoot. The wrong padding can void your carpet warranty and cause premature wear. Our team will recommend the right pad thickness and density based on your carpet choice and the room it is going in.

Get it professionally installed

Improper carpet installation causes wrinkles, buckling, visible seams, and premature wear. It can also void manufacturer warranties. At Flooring Atlanta, we assign carpet projects to our crews who specialize in carpet installation. This is not a random assignment. Our carpet crews know how to stretch, seam, and finish carpet to manufacturer specifications so your warranty stays intact.

Carpet Care and Maintenance

  • Vacuum regularly. At least once a week in low-traffic areas and 2-3 times a week in high-traffic zones. This prevents dirt from settling into the fibers and causing premature wear.
  • Address spills immediately. Blot, do not rub. Most stain-resistant carpets can handle common spills if they are treated quickly.
  • Professional cleaning. Schedule a professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months to maintain appearance and extend the life of your carpet. Many manufacturer warranties require periodic professional cleaning.
  • Use furniture pads. Place pads under heavy furniture legs to prevent indentations and crushing.
  • Rotate furniture. Shifting furniture occasionally distributes wear more evenly across the carpet.

Carpet Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our flooring services and installation

Nylon carpet with built-in stain resistance is the best option for homes with pets. It offers strong protection against pet stains and odors. Frieze and textured styles are also better at hiding paw prints and pet hair than plush. If shedding is a concern, darker colors and multi-toned patterns help between vacuuming. Visit any of our four showrooms to see pet-friendly options in person.

With proper care and professional installation, quality carpet typically lasts 10 to 15 years in residential settings. Higher-density carpet with a strong twist count will hold up longer, especially in high-traffic areas. Regular vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning are the two biggest factors in extending carpet life.

Yes. Carpet is one of the safest and most popular choices for stairs because it provides traction, reduces noise, and cushions footsteps. Patterned carpet and custom stair runners are especially popular for adding visual interest while keeping stairs safe. Browse our custom rugs and runners selection for stair options.

In most cases, old flooring should be removed before carpet installation. Installing carpet over existing flooring can cause uneven surfaces, moisture issues, and warranty problems. Our team handles removal, disposal, and subfloor preparation as part of the installation process.

Carpet installation costs vary based on the product, square footage, padding selection, and any subfloor prep needed. We provide free, transparent estimates with no hidden fees. Visit any of our four showrooms or request a free estimate online to get started.

Yes. Whether you are carpeting one bedroom or the entire upstairs, our Mohawk Credit Card lets you spread the cost over 12 months with zero interest. The card covers carpet, padding, and professional installation so you can handle the whole project under one payment plan.
