Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is a multi-layer synthetic flooring engineered to replicate the look of natural hardwood or stone. Modern LVP uses high-resolution imaging, embossed textures, and beveled edges to create planks that closely resemble the real thing.
Each plank is built from multiple layers:
LVP can be installed in nearly every room: kitchens, living areas, bedrooms, basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and entryways. Most products are 100% waterproof, making LVP one of the most versatile flooring options available.
SPC has a rigid core made from limestone and PVC. It is extremely dense and stable, which makes it highly resistant to dents and temperature changes. SPC is thinner than WPC but harder underfoot. It works well in high-traffic areas, commercial spaces, and rooms with heavy furniture.
Best for: Kitchens, entryways, commercial spaces, basements, high-traffic hallways
WPC has a core made from wood dust and PVC. It is thicker and softer underfoot than SPC, with a slight cushion that makes it more comfortable to stand on for long periods. WPC is a popular choice for bedrooms, living rooms, and areas where comfort matters as much as durability.
Best for: Bedrooms, living rooms, family rooms, home offices
Glue-down LVP is adhered directly to the subfloor using a permanent adhesive. It creates a very stable, low-profile installation that does not shift or move. Glue-down is the preferred method for commercial spaces and large open areas. It requires a smooth, clean subfloor.
Best for: Commercial spaces, large open floor plans, areas where stability is critical
Floating LVP uses a click-lock system that snaps planks together without glue or nails. It is faster to install, easier to replace individual planks, and can go over most existing hard surfaces. This is the most common installation method for residential projects.
Best for: Residential homes, DIY-friendly projects, installations over existing floors

The wear layer is the clear protective coating on top of every LVP plank. It determines how well the floor resists scratches, scuffs, and everyday wear over time. Wear layers are measured in mils (1 mil = 1/1,000 of an inch), not millimeters.
This is our high-performance standard for maximum durability, providing an industry-leading protective shield that is engineered to withstand heavy residential traffic and commercial-grade wear. Our 30 mil wear layer offers superior resistance to deep scratches and scuffs, ensuring your floors maintain their pristine look for years to come.
The thickest residential option and the standard for high-traffic homes and light commercial spaces. A 20 mil wear layer stands up to heavy foot traffic, pets, kids, and furniture movement. This is what we recommend for main living areas, kitchens, and entryways in busy households.
The most popular choice for residential homes. A 12 mil wear layer offers a strong balance of durability and value for everyday living. It handles normal foot traffic, light pet wear, and day-to-day use without issue. A good fit for bedrooms, dining rooms, and home offices.
Best for low-traffic areas and budget-conscious projects. An 8 mil wear layer is often considered builder-grade and works well in guest bedrooms, closets, and rental properties where cost is a priority.
| Wear Layer | Best For | Durability | Price Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 mil | High Residential traffic and light commercial needs | Excellent | $$$ |
| 20 mil | High-traffic homes, pets, kids, light commercial | Excellent | $$$ |
| 12 mil | Standard residential, everyday living | Very good | $$ |
| 8 mil | Low-traffic rooms, rentals, budget projects | Good | $-$$ |

Both are strong choices depending on the room and your priorities. If you want waterproof performance and lower maintenance, LVP is the practical pick. If you want a floor that can be refinished over decades and adds premium resale value, hardwood is worth the investment. Many homeowners use both: hardwood in main living areas and LVP in kitchens, basements, and bathrooms.
For most Atlanta homes, a 12 mil or 20 mil wear layer is the right range. If you have pets, kids, or heavy foot traffic, go with 20 mil. If you are flooring a bedroom, office, or low-traffic space, 12 mil gives you solid performance at a lower price point.
SPC is the better choice for kitchens, basements, entryways, and any area with heavy use. WPC is the better choice for bedrooms, living rooms, and spaces where comfort underfoot matters. Both are waterproof.
Floating LVP can go over most existing hard surfaces (tile, vinyl, concrete) as long as the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Glue-down requires a smooth subfloor with no debris. Our team checks subfloor conditions during every free in-home measurement and recommends the best installation method for your situation.
Many of the LVP products at Flooring Atlanta are FloorScore certified, which means they meet strict standards for low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. FloorScore is the preferred indoor air quality certification for homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.
All LVP flooring sold in the U.S. must also comply with:

Most LVP products are 100% waterproof at the plank level, featuring a core, wear layer, and backing designed to fully resist moisture in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. However, it is important to note that if the floor is completely submersed in water, moisture can become trapped underneath the planks where mold may grow, requiring a full replacement. While the planks themselves won’t be damaged by spills, wiping up standing water promptly prevents it from seeping through click-lock seams and protects your subfloor from potential mold issues.
SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) has a dense, rigid core made from limestone and PVC. It is thinner, harder, and more dent-resistant, which makes it a strong choice for high-traffic areas and commercial spaces. WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) has a core made from wood dust and PVC. It is thicker, softer underfoot, and more comfortable to stand on. WPC is popular for bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices where comfort is a priority. Both are waterproof and available in a wide range of styles.
In most cases, yes. Floating (click-lock) LVP can be installed over tile, sheet vinyl, and other hard surfaces provided the existing floor is clean, dry, and level. However, we do not recommend installing LVP directly over concrete, as most manufacturers will void the warranty if installed on that specific subfloor. Minor surface imperfections may require a leveling compound, and you should keep in mind that layering floors can slightly increase height and affect doorway transitions. Always check your specific manufacturer’s warranty, as some require the removal of the old floor for full coverage.
With professional installation and normal care, LVP flooring lasts 10 to 20 years depending on the wear layer thickness, the core type, and the amount of traffic the floor receives. A 20 mil wear layer in a residential home will hold up significantly longer than an 8 mil product in the same space. Unlike hardwood, LVP cannot be refinished. When the wear layer is worn through, the planks need to be replaced. The good news is that individual planks on floating installations can often be swapped out without redoing the entire floor.
For most Atlanta homes, we recommend 12 mil or 20 mil. If you have pets, kids, or high foot traffic in your main living areas, 20 mil gives you the best long-term protection. 12 mil is a solid choice for bedrooms, guest rooms, and home offices with lighter daily use. 8 mil works for low-traffic spaces and budget projects, but it will show wear faster in busy areas. If you are unsure, bring your room layout and lifestyle details to any of our showrooms and we will help match the right wear layer to each space.
Yes. All LVP flooring sold in the United States must meet EPA indoor air quality requirements, TSCA Title VI standards, and CARB Phase 2 compliance. Many of the products at Flooring Atlanta are also FloorScore certified, which is a stricter third-party standard for low VOC emissions. FloorScore-certified products are approved for use in homes, schools, and healthcare facilities. If air quality is a concern for your household, ask our team to show you FloorScore-certified options when you visit.
